Mike Tomalaris talks with Father Chris Riley

Mike Tomalaris recently got together with Father Chris Riley to chat about the ride and the impact it continues to have supporting the work of Youth Off The Streets.

As you know, the ride has raised over $3 million and we’re hoping to add significantly to that total with this year’s twentieth anniversary ride.

You can see the full video of Mike’s interview with Father Chris below. We’ve also prepared three short 90-second clips which will be ideal for you to use in your fundraising efforts. You can share them on social media and by email directly with your networks to help illustrate the work done by Youth Off The Streets and encourage your contacts to support your fundraising efforts.

One final chance to register for the FREE ride kit!

We’ve had a couple of requests from new riders who just missed the deadline for the free ride kit.  We’ll be placing one final order for jerseys and knicks in the next couple of days, so we’re offering one final chance to anyone who hasn’t yet registered to receive the free ride kit.

To be eligible for the free ride kit, riders must register by midnight on Tuesday 13 March – there can be no more extensions.

If you’ve been unable to commit until now, you can register now. Do it on your own or do it with some of your cycling buddies but we promise you won’t regret taking on the challenge and the opportunity to ride one of Australia’s premier charity cycle tours.

We hope to see you on 5 May for the start of a great week of riding. In the meantime, stay safe on the roads and if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us.

Last Chance! to register and qualify for the FREE ride kit!

It was great to see a rush of new riders register for the 2018 Sydney to Surfers Robbo’s Ride after our last update a few days ago.

We just wanted to remind you that tomorrow is the last day to sign up for the ride and be eligible for the FREE ride kit.

The design of the twentieth anniversary ride jersey and knicks has been finalised – they look great and we’re really excited by the quality and the look of this year’s kit. There’s no free previews however, so you’ll have to wait till you get to the start line to see it!

We can’t wait to see what it looks like on a peloton of up to 200 riders cruising through Surfers Paradise on the last leg of this epic ride!

Friends, we have the order primed and ready to go to the manufacturer … all that’s missing is YOU!

Now’s the time to make the commitment and register for the ride before 1 March when orders for the FREE ride kit close. Do it on your own or do it with some of your cycling buddies but we promise you won’t regret taking on the challenge and the opportunity to ride with SBS cycling guru, Mike Tomalaris.

We hope to see you on 5 May for the start of a great week of riding. In the meantime, stay safe on the roads and if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us.

Latest news on the 2018 Twentieth Anniversary ride

We’ve had some great feedback to the news that Mike Tomalaris is joining us as ambassador and rider for the twentieth anniversary ride to Surfers – both on social media and direct to us.

Mike’s involvement promises to make the twentieth anniversary ride something special! Mike will be riding with our packs every day of the tour; he’ll be sharing the fun, the laughs and maybe a little pain. He’ll share in the camaraderie at meal times and be speaking with us to share some of his memories and experiences from a long career in the sport we love.Mike will host the final dinner at the Watermark Gold Coast Resort and (schedules permitting) join us in Engadine for the Presentation Dinner in June 2018.

There’s only a few days left now for riders to register and lock in their FREE ride kit comprising the ride jersey and knicks! If you’re still considering your options, now’s the time to make the commitment and register for the ride before 1 March when orders for the FREE ride kit close.

Joining on your own is a great way to make new friends or why not share our website and facebook page with some of your cycling buddies and do it together.

We know that Mike has been out riding with our friends at Two Monkeys Cycling to get himself ready for the ride – don’t forget if you decide to join us, there’s training tips on our website to help you with your preparation for the event.

Our team of volunteers are an important part of the success of the Sydney to Surfers Ride. At this stage, our catering team is complete and ready to supply you with morning tea and lunch each day of the ride but we still need a few people who can help as drivers for pack support vehicles, luggage trucks and courtesy buses.

If you are unable to ride this year, perhaps you may like to come along as a volunteer instead – it’s a fun and rewarding experience and an opportunity to make new friends and support a great charity. If you can help, we’d love to hear from you! Please contact us for more information.

We’re also looking for significant items to be auctioned to raise additional funds for Youth Off The Streets. Please email us if you think you can offer something suitable.

We hope to see you on 5 May for the start of a great week of riding. In the meantime, stay safe on the roads and if you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us.

A special announcement

We promised you a special announcement, and here it is!

We’re very excited that SBS cycling guru, Mike Tomalaris, will be joining us in 2018 as ambassador for the twentieth anniversary Sydney to Surfers Robbo’s Ride!

For Australian cycling fans, Mike Tomalaris is cycling. Mike joined SBS in 1992 covering the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic and since then has covered a growing portfolio of local and international cycling events – including the Tour Down Under, the Giro d’Italia, the Vuelta a España, the Tour of California and Paris–Roubaix. Mike has been the face of the Tour de France for SBS for over 15 years.

In 2011, Mike featured in the Australian Sports Commission Media Awards which recognise excellence in sports journalism and broadcasting. Mike’s award for ‘Most Outstanding Contribution to a Sport by an Individual’ recognised his significant role in promoting the sport of cycling in Australia.

For the 2018 Sydney to Surfers Ride, Mike will be helping with promotion of the ride and fundraising for Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets.

And … he’ll be with us on 5 May to begin the long ride north to Surfers Paradise. Mike will be riding with our packs every day of the tour; he’ll be sharing the fun, the laughs and maybe a little pain. He’ll share in the camaraderie at meal times and be speaking with us to share some of his memories and experiences from a long career in the sport we love.

Mike will host the final dinner at the Watermark Gold Coast Resort and (schedules permitting) join us in Engadine for the Presentation Dinner in June 2018.

Mike was instrumental in establishing the Johnny Warren Jamberoo Classic to raise funds for Chris O’Brien’s Lifehouse and we’re very proud and excited to have him on board for the 2018 Sydney to Surfers Ride to raise funds for Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets.

Registrations continue to flow in – ahead of the same period last year – but we still have some places available. If you’re thinking of joining us – and Mike Tomalaris – for this special anniversary ride, now would be a good time to take the plunge and register for the ride. You may like to share our website and facebook page with your networks and get your cycling buddies along too!

We’ll have more news to share soon on planning for the 2018 ride.

In the meantime, let us know if you have any questions or suggestions – and stay safe on the roads!

We’ve got news and a special announcement coming!

Now that the holiday season is almost behind us, it’s time to make the most of the opportunities a new year brings. The 2018 Sydney to Surfers Robbo’s Ride is a great opportunity to do something important for yourself and for youth at risk in our community.

There’s only 80-odd days to go until we head off on this fantastic riding tour and we noticed you haven’t signed up…yet!

We still have places available so if you and any of your cycling friends are considering joining us, now’s the time to get together and make the commitment to register for the ride. We are strictly limited to 200 riders on this year’s ride and we expect to have a rush of registrations now as people focus on their plans for the new year.

We’d really love you to join us and if the 2018 ride is on your agenda, now is the time to:

  1. Commit to the ride and register – remember the number of riders is limited and spaces are filling faster than they did last year;
  2. Convince your riding pals to join you – share our website and facebook page with your networks;
  3. Book your accommodation (if you are not camping) – accommodation options are listed on the accommodation page of our website;
  4. Start your training – there are some useful suggestions on the training page;
  5. Start your fundraising – our fundraising page has some useful resources to help you;
  6. Ensure your bike is mechanically sound (remember, it is a long way).

Our latest news …

We are aware that some riders are having difficulty getting accommodation in Bulahdelah. As a result, we have added Myall Shores Holiday Park to the list of accommodation locations which will be serviced by the Engadine Rotary courtesy bus. Myall Shores has a range of accommodation options and they can be contacted on 1300 769 566.

We have also added to the website a facility for riders who may have a spare bed available to offer to share their accommodation (and cost) with other riders. You can also make a  ‘share wanted’ post if you’re looking for a bed. Head to our new ShareMarket page on the website to learn more.

Are you a member of one of the Australian cycling organisations? Do you have insurance cover in the event of an accident when you are on your bike? Remember, personal insurance for the Sydney to Surfers ride is the rider’s responsibility – riders are not covered by the Rotary Insurance Policy.

Bicycle NSW have come on board for the 2018 Sydney to Surfers Robbo’s Ride with a fantastic offer for new members who join up for the remainder of this financial year. Membership includes comprehensive recreational bike riders insurance along with the other benefits of belonging to NSW leading bicycle organisation.

Best of all, if you sign up as a Sydney to Surfers rider, you’ll get a MASSIVE discount on the usual membership cost! Any better and it’d be FREE! To access this discount, you have to be registered to participate in the 2018 Sydney to Surfers Ride.

And coming soon …

We’re excited!

We can’t tell you why just yet but we’ll have a special announcement about this year’s ride very soon!

Keep an eye on your inbox and our facebook page next week! And just a tip: if you or your cycling buddies are thinking about registering for the ride, you may want to get in before this news becomes public!
